super fast and nourishing MISO DRINK
« on: September 28, 2012, 06:28:23 PM »
As Autumn's crisp air is finally and graciously upon us, I find myself yearning for hot soups and drinks. Though the best soups are simmered slowly and lovingly, I find there is a need for quick, hot drinks throughout the day- especially when one finds oneself thinking about a cup of black tea or coffee. Yikes!

So, this recipe is to combat those cravings for traditional unhealthy hot drinks. It is quick, nourishing, easy and always brings to my mind the story of Stone Soup - because you can put in whatever you want. And that always puts a smile on my face.

Put the kettle on.

Into a mug or bowl, put in:
1 T. miso paste (if you're in the habit of using miso, you'd know what your preference is)
1-2 t. sesame oil
1-2 t. Bragg's apple cider vinegar (optional)
1 T. wakame, dulse, or hijiki (optional)
dash of cayenne or other spice (optional)

Fill the mug with hot water and stir. Done. How easy was that?

And if you are feeling peckish, you could always add in some rice, quinoa, buckwheat noodles, leftover chicken, etc.

I find this to be a great complement to a meal as it adds nutrition density, and perfect for after school time when the kids are hungry and cold.

Please try it and let me know what you think. ;)

:D Yea! Thank you Nancy for this quick recipe. I was thinking just the same thing the other day. I am craving miso soup. I can not get enough. I will definitely use your recipe. It's perfect.

I too love the Stone Soup Story. Sometimes I just get tired of regular water or tea. Then have something nutritious, especially when I am working is fantastic. I will be able to put these items in a mug and take it with me and while I am at my clients I can just put the kettle on and have a quick nutrition boost without simmering for hours.

Wow, thank you Suzanne. I love getting feedback to my posts!

I'm going to use this recipe as my food demo for my class on Monday. I checked the forecast and it'll be cool and maybe even wet in Berkeley. Perfect!

Hello Suzy,

You're so cute. Went to the store to get stuff...

I really like wakame with this soup because of the texture and the taste. Yesterday at Whole Foods I found organic kelp granules by Maine Coast Sea Vegetables and will also bring this along for the class today. By the way, I find apple cider vinegar helps balance the richness and oiliness of the sesame oil - but it's up to the individual taste. You'll see...

I'll let you know later their reaction. Haha.

And I'm the same way, it's the little things!  ;)

Have a super fun day!

Nancy

Hey Suzy! ;D

Thanks for asking. We had a great time with it. I think it was fun to get them to measure out their own miso, and put in the other stuff, like a science experiment. My goal was to familiarize them with miso paste and seaweed because we read so much about it at Bauman. This way, it can easily become part of a regular diet, and not just ordered in a Japanese restaurant. And...the sesame oil gave it a subtle richness and nuttiness. Did you get a chance to try it yet?

Hope you had a fun day.

Nancy
