Hot Cereal
« on: November 10, 2007, 08:41:44 AM »
This recipe has potential for endless variations.  Choose the grains, nuts and fruit of your liking, add in anything else that sounds delicious and enjoy this wintertime treat.

The cereal:
1 c. water
1 c. mixed cereal (about 1/2 rolled oats, 1/4 spelt flakes and millet)
1 large apple cored and chopped into small pieces
dried fruit (dried cranberries)

Add ins:
chopped nuts (pecans)
ground flax seed
cinnamon
milk

Heat water in uncovered sauce pan.  Add chopped apple.  Add cereal mix once the apple as cooked for 1-2 minutes.  Stir apple and cereal and turn the heat down so that the water is gently bubbling.  Cook uncovered until the water has cooked off completely (about 10 min).  You will cease to see the large bubbles around the edge of the pot and the sound of the cooking will change to a higher pitch.  Serve hot with add ins available.
