Vitamin D Supplements and Prevention of Cancer and Cardiovascular Disease

A recent study by The New England Journal of Medicine about the benefits of Vitamin D and Fish Oil supplements has gotten a lot of attention online and many health oriented magazines have published provocative headlines like “Why you should stop spending money on Vitamin D and Fish Oil”.
Study published here:
https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa1809944#article_references
According to the study, “Supplementation with vitamin D did not result in a lower incidence of invasive cancer or cardiovascular events than placebo.”. I’m curious what others think, is this conclusive or is more study needed? For example some experts say it doesn’t mean we should stop taking these because there may be other benefits but all the articles I read acknowledge that the study does suggest that the benefits we thought there were for heart health may be over promised.
